Sports stories from around the region
With most of our Flyers discussion centering on losses and coaching changes and captaincy controversy, I think most of us are ready to just see some hockey players get on the ice and do some hitting and scoring. We'll have more on that a bit later, with the newish-look Flyers set to take on the Ovechkin-less Caps tonight, but for now, a little reminder of something we can all look forward to.

When your quarterback gets pulled in favor of a 33-year-old Koy Detmer haflway through a game, chances are better than not that you're going to lose that game 42-0. The Eagles found that one out the hard way on December 5th, 2005, when the Seattle Seahawks came to the Linc and very rudely thrashed their guests to the titular six-TD+PAT tune. Awash in the TO fallout and missing QB1 Donovan McNabb for the remainder of the seaosn, the game was the worst of a very bad season, dropping the Eagles to 5-7 and basically ensuring their absence from a fifth straight NFC Championship game.

Tim Panaccio is reporting on Daily News Live that the Flyers will hire Peter Laviolette to succeed John Stevens as the next head coach of the team. He'll be joined by Kevin McCarthy, who will leave the Hurricanes to be an assistant for the Flyers, according to Darren Dreger. The American-born Laviolette is a change of pace for the Flyers in that he's not someone who has played or coached within the organization before, and they often like to stay in-house. However, Laviolette does have ties to Paul Holmgren, with bot... Read the rest of "The Peter Laviolette Era Begins in Philadelphia"

After being shut out for 8 straight periods and going on a long losing streak that sees the team currently sitting outside of the Eastern Conference's top 8 seedings, the Flyers have fired head coach John Stevens. There is no definitive word yet on his successor, but names like Peter Laviolette and Craig Berube had been mentioned earlier in the week. The Phillies are expected to direct their remaining offseason efforts toward the bullpen. But with resources stretched, there’s a chance not every hole will be filled by an established reliever. Ruben Amaro got his third baseman. Now comes the hard part: untangling the web in middle relief. Free agents Chan Ho Park and Scott Eyre were not offered arbitration, even though they filled very important roles in the 'pen last season. Meanwhile, Chad Durbin and Clay Condrey are due raises...... Read the rest of "Phillies could lean on young pitching in bullpen"
… before you fire Eddie Jordan?
Serious question.
I want to know what the criteria is for firing a coach. Where is the breaking point?
8 losses in a row? Check. 9? Might be checking this tomorrow. 10? 15? (not if A.I. has anything to say about it)
28th ranked defense that is getting progressively worse? Check. And that’s before Iverson has played a game.
28th ranked defensive rebounding team? Check.
Not playing one PF/C more than 30 minutes per game. Check. Particularly, not playing the guy you blew your load on two off-seasons ago and effectively pissing him off. Check.
Playing Willie Green 41 minutes, more than any other player, and keeping a straight face while justifying it? Check.

Jayson Stark is reporting that Ruben Amaro’s main focus now that 3B is ironed out is relief pitching, particularly Brandon Lyon.
Lyon, 30, was tremendous for the Tigers last year (2.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP in 78.2 IP) and has closing experience (54 career saves) in case Brad Lidge can’t get it together.
Lyon had a tough year in 2008 (4.70 ERA for Arizona) but improved a lot last year when he added a slider to his repertoire and stopped relying so much on his fastball. He is not a strikeout guy, but doesn’t allow a lot hits. Stark points out that his 6.41 H/9 are the fewest among free agent relievers with at least 65 IP last year.
I would be thrilled with Lyon who fills several needs (set-up man, replacement closer) and has a nice history of staying healthy.
