Baby Names I must be out of the loop.

December 23, 2006 - 1:23pm
Baby Names I must be out of the loop. Apparently, the 10 most popular baby names for 2005 were Emily, Emma, Madison, Abigail, Olivia, Isabella, Hannah, Samantha, Ava and Ashley. As far as i can recall, i don't know a single Emma, Madison, Olivia, Isabella or Ava - and can't really imagine anyone i know tagging their kids with such pretentious crap. Oh, and the NSA has secretly installed... Read the rest of "Baby Names I must be out of the loop."

November 25, 2006 - 7:21pm
Reflections on Music MY, with whom i generally disagree with on all things musical, gets this one exactly right: Generally speaking, I'm opposed to bands developing new sounds, "maturing" or anything else. I say, make three good albums then break up and/or have crucial members die in a tragic manner. Amen.... Read the rest of "Reflections on Music MY, with whom i"

Case of the Day Officers responding to

November 16, 2006 - 7:25am
Case of the Day Officers responding to 911 call about decedent's attempted suicide were justified in entering without knocking. Their use of deadly force on decedent to prevent his suicide was also justified because they feared for their own safety. Conway v. Battelle, 2006 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 14239 (E.D. Mo. March 30, 2006) This one is more egregious than most. Decedant was 24 years old, in his... Read the rest of "Case of the Day Officers responding to"

Activist Cindy Sheehan Arrested at Capitol Cindy ...

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
Activist Cindy Sheehan Arrested at Capitol Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq who reinvigorated the anti-war movement, was arrested and removed from the House gallery Tuesday night just before President Bush's State of the Union address, a police spokeswoman said. Sheehan, who had been invited to attend the speech by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., was charged with demonstrating in the Capitol building, a misdemeanor, said Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider. Sheehan was taken in handcuffs to police headquarters a few blocks away and her case was processed as Bush spoke. Schneider said Sheehan had worn a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to the speech and covered it up until she took her seat. Police warned her that such displays were not allowed, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman sai... Read the rest of "Activist Cindy Sheehan Arrested at Capitol Cindy ..."

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
Spreading Democracy The NY Times reports, to no one's great surprise, that the Bush Admistration carries much of the blame for allowing, in fact encouraging, the democratic elements there to crumble. Your tax dollars, in fact, worked to undermine the elected government. Now, I have no love for Aristide, but this is just disgusting. Nothing more to say. I left Port Au Prince on 20 May 2000. The things I saw there still make me cry. The people deserve better.... Read the rest of "Spreading Democracy The NY Times reports, to no o..."

As Profits Soar, Companies Pay U.S. Less for Gas R...

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
As Profits Soar, Companies Pay U.S. Less for Gas Rights At a time when energy prices and industry profits are soaring, the federal government collected little more money last year than it did five years ago from the companies that extracted more than $60 billion in oil and gas from publicly owned lands and coastal waters. Shifting Numbers on Price Reports (January 23, 2006) If royalty payments in fiscal 2005 for natural gas had risen in step with market prices, the government would have received about $700 million more than it actually did, a three-month investigation by The New York Times has found. But an often byzantine set of federal regulations, largely shaped and fiercely defended by the energy industry itself, allowed companies producing natural gas to provide the Interior Dep... Nuclear Monitoring of Muslims Done Without Search...

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
Nuclear Monitoring of Muslims Done Without Search Warrants In search of a terrorist nuclear bomb, the federal government since 9/11 has run a far-reaching, top secret program to monitor radiation levels at over a hundred Muslim sites in the Washington, D.C., area, including mosques, homes, businesses, and warehouses, plus similar sites in at least five other cities, U.S. News has learned. In numerous cases, the monitoring required investigators to go on to the property under surveillance, although no search warrants or court orders were ever obtained, according to those with knowledge of the program. Some participants were threatened with loss of their jobs when they questioned the legality of the operation, according to these accounts. Sweet!... I.R.S. Limited Tax Refunds of Poor, Congress Is To...

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
I.R.S. Limited Tax Refunds of Poor, Congress Is Told Tax refunds sought by hundreds of thousands of poor Americans have been frozen and their returns labeled fraudulent, blocking refunds for years to come, the Internal Revenue Service's taxpayer advocate told Congress today. The taxpayers, whose average income was $13,000, were not told that they were suspected of fraud, the advocate said in her annual report to Congress. The advocate, Nina Olson, said her staff sampled suspected returns and found that, at most, one in five was questionable. A computer program selected the returns as part of the questionable refund program run by the criminal investigation division of the Internal Revenue Service. In some cases, the criminal division ordered that... Read the rest of "I.R.S. Limited Tax Refunds of Poor, Congress Is To..."

Incentives and the HIV Vaccine In an unusually ca...

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
Incentives and the HIV Vaccine In an unusually candid admission, the federal chief of AIDS research says he believes drug companies don't have an incentive to create a vaccine for the HIV and are likely to wait to profit from it after the government develops one. That means the government has had to spend more time focusing on the processes that drug companies ordinarily follow in developing new medicines and bringing them to market. "We had to spend some time and energy paying attention to those aspects of development because the private side isn't picking it up," Dr. Edmund Tramont testified in a deposition in a recent employment lawsuit obtained by The Associated Press. Tramont is head of the AIDS research division of the National Institutes of Health, and he predicted... Read the rest of "Incentives and the HIV Vaccine In an unusually ca..."

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
signalingTim Hardford (in The Undercover Economist, which i rec'd for for Xmas) points to the University degree as an example of signaling. The idea is this: In America these days an undergraduate degree in, say, philosophy doesn't necessarily say that much about the holder's abilities as a philosopher - the studies aren't particularly difficult and one doesn't have to possess any extraordinary amount of intelligence in order to graduate. However, it does require some amount of intelligence and effort, so that those who hold the degree ar... Read the rest of "signaling Tim Hardford (in The Undercover Economi..."

November 7, 2006 - 7:23pm
New York Police Covertly Join In at Protest Rallies Undercover New York City police officers have conducted covert surveillance in the last 16 months of people protesting the Iraq war, bicycle riders taking part in mass rallies and even mourners at a street vigil for a cyclist killed in an accident, a series of videotapes show.In glimpses and in glaring detail, the videotape images reveal the robust presence of disguised officers or others working with them at seven public gatherings since August 2004.The officers hoist protest signs. They hold flowers with mourners. They ride in bicycle events. At the vigil for the cyclist, an officer in biking gear wore a button that said, "I am a shameless agitator." She also carried a camera and videotaped the roughly 15 people present.Beyond collecting information, s... Read the rest of "New York Police Covertly Join In at Protest Rallie..."
