Once again, Bud Selig and Major League Baseball prove that they have no coherent grasp on how to run a league.
We've already stated our contempt for the man, but Selig has now robbed the World Champions of one of their best relievers for close to a third of the 2009 season, but also taken $1.25 million from a man who not only did nothing wrong, but did everything in his power to do right.
J.C. Romero, the winning pitcher in Games 3 and 5 of the 2008 World Series, was suspended for 50 games following a ruling that he violated Major League Baseball's policy on banned substa... Read the rest of "Relieved of Duty"

Lately, it's kind of seemed like it's always Restaurant Week—but then 2008 went by in a blur, so maybe it's just us. But today, at least, it's not just us, because Restaurant Week is once again on the horizon. The restaurant list features old favorites and new additions alike, and even though the price has gone up a bit in the last few years, we still think most restaurants put out special price-fixed menus that are tough to beat for $35 (plus tax, alcohol, and tip—of course).

As we stated in our Yo, Philly in the News post on December 1, 2007, former Philadelphia City Paper managing editor Brian Hickey was gravely injured in a hit-and-run in Collingswood, New Jersey, by an asshole motorist. Hickey also managed the campaign for John Dougherty's attempt to unseat Senator Vincent Fumo.
The Philadelphia City Paper and the Pen & Pencil Club have organized a Beef and Beer event to raise money for Hickey's family. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Brian's family to support his recovery.
You can also follow Brian's progress with his injuries via the sporadic updates provided by Jeff Pearlman (famed scribe of Boys Will Be Boys: The Gl... Read the rest of "Beef and Beer for Brian Hickey"

Seven city fire companies ceased operations yesterday as part of Mayor Nutter's budget-cutting plan, but not without drama, as the head of the firefighters' union claimed that "people will die" because of the closures. Nutter stated yesterday that his "fiscal-austerity" plan will not endanger public safety and will keep response times within national standards, then proceed with the closings as the union's efforts to stop them faltered.
The city is urging residents not to take their Christmas trees to the curb. The c... Read the rest of "Yo, Philly in the News"

Dear Sparky and Snarky,
The other night I was fairly hammered and while walking home I totally sprawled myself face first on the pavement. Well, a cop saw it and caught up to me a block later; I thought I was getting a ticket for public drunkness but instead I ended up with the offer for a ride home because his "job was to make sure cute guys like me got home safe." Not only did he flirt with me, he gave me his number and whipped it out for an impressive preview of what he was offering. He's since called and I haven't called him back. Why? Because he has a fiancée. He's totally hot and I'd love to hook up with him, but I'm not sure it's a good idea. What do I do?

If only we looked as good as we did in the 80's. That's why there are things like style resolutions. See what tops the list this year.
1. Get more manicures. Many girls feel prettier when their nails are done. Try these colors from Essie.
2. Subscribe to a couple style magazines like InStyle or Real Simple to stay on top of the latest trends, but don't let them rule your life. There's nothing wrong with going out in sweat pants and a t-shirt every now and then.

Yesterday, Governor Rendell called for legislation to keep repeat violent offenders locked up longer. "The parole system simply doesn't work for these violent individuals who use deadly weapons," Rendell said. This legislative effort would not change the sentencing guidelines that judges employ or the factors that parole boards can consider. The law would apply to people previously convicted of such violent crimes as manslaughter, robbery and rape. For such criminals, almost any second arrest would trigger the tougher sentencing schedule.
Mayor Nutter will ask a Common Pleas judge to reconsider her r... Read the rest of "Yo, Philly in the News"
