The rumors about local radio station y100 (WPLY 100.3) switching formats turned out to be true.
A popular local radio station went off the air early Friday morning, with little notice. In its place is a hip-hop station with lower ratings.Modern rock station Y100, or WPLY-FM 100.3, went off the air early Friday morning.
Now in its place is hip-hop station WPHI-FM, or The Beat, which owner Radio One Inc. moved from 103.9 into Y100's slot at 100.3.
The last station I liked in this town was WDRE (103.9), an electic mix of alt-rock, local music, and off-center syndicated national music shows like Modern Rock Live. It could have just been my teenage lens, but I thought the station was great. It switched to a hip-hop station (103.9 The Beat) when purchased by RadioOne. It turns out that y100 was bought by RadioOne and they are now going to broadcast their hip hop station through the 100.3 frequency, presumably because it's better to be in the middle of the dial.
The change isn't that surprising considering the recent announcement that WMMR (93.3) would now handle the promotion for the Grape Street Pub's Tuesday Night Music Club, now called the Tuesday Night Rock Show. Also, Preston and Steve from y100's morning show recently signed a deal to take over at WMMR.
Originally, y100 was a replacement for the old top 40 station, Eagle 106, when they decided they could somehow make more money playing crappy elevator jazz. When WDRE changed formats, a bunch of the DJs left to work for y100 which then changed to a modern rock station.
Oh well, at least they're still speaking English.
