Earl Pickens @ Grape Street

Earl Pickens is playing Grape Street in Manayunk this Tuesday 9/26. The show marks his first Philly appearance.

Earl brings the energy and presence of a full rock band to an acoustic set of carefully crafted country songs. It's about time Philly gets a chance to check him out.

You can listen to songs from his debut album "Country Music Jukebox." One of his tracks made its way onto wxpn's syndicated World Cafe show. He's also scheduled to sit on Gene Shay's The Folk Show in November.

Stop by Grape Street if you can to show Earl some Philly support.

Cardinal Krol: Don't say nuttin

Some of the priests who carried out the Roman Catholic Church's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on child molestation are starting to flip. One Philadelphia priest in particular has come clean on his role in a cover up. His orders to keep silent came directly from the head office of the Philadelphia diocese.

The Inquirer leads with the story in Sunday's paper in a well written, and throughly investigated piece entitled Priest: Silence ordered on abuse.

Pinkston, out...

Wolfman Howie Eskin is reporting Eagles WR Todd Pinkston is out for the 2005 season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Ok, time to dump TO

Originally, I was worried about rumors Terrell Owens might be traded.

I've seen the light. Dump the guy. ASAP.

Corn powered cars?

After reading Albert's post on ever climbing gas prices... I remembered the bio-diesel bus that has been parked in my neighborhood for the past few days.

Protests never seem to make much difference. How do we go about creating a market for fuel-efficient, environment friendly automobiles and energy production? The interest in hybrid vehicles seems strong. I've heard of 6 month back orders in some places for Toyota's Prius model. PECO has begun offering customers the option to switch to wind-powered electricity.

Will we ever wean our economy off of oil?

TO trade, say it isn't so!

Channel 6 posted a story speculating about TO going to the Raiders. Macknow on WIP isn't confirming it, but says there's a lot of buzz, and that the trade might bring Jerry Porter to the Eagles. There's been rumblings all week. But now it seems to be serious.

Porter had 1000 yards receiving, 9 TD's, and 64 catches in 2004. He's 4 years younger than Owens.

Hopefully, this is doesn't happen.

Welcome America, is that still going on?

I can't help but feel badly for the people organizing Philly's annual Welcome America events. With all the Live 8 hoopla, these events have been pushed down into nothing more than background noise.

All week, movies are being shown on the Art Museum steps, last night was Rocky II. Thursday, there's an arts festival on the Avenue of the Arts section of Broad Street. Ruben Studdard was supposed to play a show at Penn's Landing Saturday. Has Studdard been cancelled? It all culminates with an Elton John concert, and fireworks on the 4th.

If nothing else, this year's Live 8 competition might motivate the Welcome America crew to liven up next year's festivities a bit. And maybe even add blogging to their marketing plan.

Live 8 Press Credentials

David Sifry, founder of Technorati, yesterday announced the availability of press credentials for each of the upcoming Live 8 shows. They have backstage passes to give to five Philly area bloggers to cover the concert from behind the scenes.

Out of all the cities, five additional bloggers will be flown from New York to Edinburgh to cover the trip, along with the actual start of the G8 conference.

It doesn't take anything more than an email to put your name in the mix. No matter what you think about the concert line-up, or the effectiveness of the effort... here's your chance to see it happen first hand, and tell your side of the story.

Tickets can only be bought by phone through Ticketmaster from nbc10

Rindelaub reprieve... for now

A philly judge stayed the demolition of Rindelaub Row today. While the ruling seems shakey at best, it's at least a bit of hope for Save Our Square, a community group fighting the impending construction of a 33 story condo tower on the site.

Is the stuggle in Rittenhouse Row indicative of a larger problem in this city?
