At 11.30a today a fire broke out at a University of the Arts metal foundry studio at the northeast corner of 15th and Pine Sts. According to UArts Chief Communications Officer, Paul Healy, artists in the studio use wax to create bronze sculptures. The casts are placed in a kiln where the wax melts off (lost wax casting). Normally, the wax is burned in the fire of the kiln, but in this case, wax accumulated underneath the kiln, overheated, and caught fire. One person was in the studio at the time of the fire, but got out safely. Onlookers said he ran back inside, twice, after realizing there were several liters of highly flammable liquids still in the studio as the fire department had not made it to the scene at the time.
Approximately 4 ladder companies, 1 snorkel company, 1 SQRT company and loads of EMS crews were on hand to put out the blaze and help anyone in need. Above are firefighters opening up the roof of the building.
By 12.10p, most of the blaze was out after the roof was opened up, but additional water was poured in to cool everything off.
By 12.30p, the fire crews were packing up while the last of the water was poured onto the roof.
There was no word as to how much of the foundry was burned or if it would be reopened anytime soon.

The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, together with The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, will host a large public forum on May 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., where a panel of scientists and policy experts will discuss the impacts of “Global Warming in the Delaware Valley.” This free, town hall-style meeting is one of many installments in the Academy’s “Town Square” series, which is taking place at the museum’s headquarters near Logan Square on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
“As scientists, it is critically important to share the latest facts and to hear what people are most concerned about. That is the goal of this forum,” said Dr. Danielle Kreeger, science director at the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. “We also want to think strategically about needs and actions in the future. For example, what do we do when changes in climate begin to interact with changes in our backyard, like land use and water management? These are just a few of the things we’ll discuss.”
Prior to the evening’s discussion, scientists will be joined by policy makers and resource managers, among others, for a day-long technical workshop on climate change in the Delaware Estuary. The goal of this earlier gathering is to compare data on climate change in a way that allows professionals to move forward in a concerted, regional approach to natural resource restoration and protection. The results of the workshop will be presented during the evening’s Town Square meeting in an effort to gather public input.
“This is a much needed information exchange and discussion for scientists, resource managers and the public on a very important topic,” said Dr. David Velinsky, an environmental biogeochemist and vice president of the Patrick Center for Environmental Research at the Academy. “The outcomes of this forum will be used to advise environmental leaders regarding the ways they can adapt to the local aspects of climate change we expect to see in the next 10 to 30 years.”
The evening’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, president of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment. Panelists will include Carol Collier of the Delaware River Basin Commission, Barry Seymour of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, and Jennifer Adkins of the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, the latter of which will serve as moderator.
“Town Square” is made possible thanks to the financial assistance of the Claneil Foundation and the Environmental Associates of The Academy of Natural Sciences. For more information, please visit www.DelawareEstuary.org or www.ANSP.org/townsquare.

If I were to guess, I'd guess that John (Johnny Doc) Dougherty is the front-runner in the Democratic primary for the Pennsylvania Senate seat abandoned by ethically challenged and indicted Vince Fumo. Oh woe is me. I cannot possibly vote Republican this Fall for that seat, as the Republican in the race, Jack Morley, is a complete and utter nutcase. (Hey, Jack, how did that brandishing of a weapon in a bar thing come out, anyway?) We're all hoping Anne Dicker can pull off an upset.
But this isn't about Anne Dicker, a fine organizer and community advocate. This is about the bully and thug, Johnny Doc. Yeah, I'll admit that the third candidate in this race, Larry Farnese, has it right. Johnny Doc is a bully and a thug. But it's his lack of ethics that should make us all rally against sending him to Harrisburg. Here's the latest on Johnny Doc from the Philadelphia Daily News:
A mysterious flier that surfaced in last year's mayoral race comparing Michael Nutter's stop-and-frisk proposal to an infamous police raid on the Black Panthers was created by a consultant for the city electricians union, the city Board of Ethics disclosed yesterday.
The consultant, Tommie St. Hill, said yesterday he had prepared the flier on his own, without financial support from the electricians or anyone else.
But the Ethics Board, an independent agency responsible for enforcing the city's campaign finance laws, appears to be investigating the possibility that the electricians' political-action committee paid for the leaflet and filed misleading financial reports to conceal it.
The union is led by John J. Dougherty, now a candidate for the state Senate. During last year's mayoral race, Dougherty was a prominent backer of Tom Knox, the insurance tycoon who finished second to Nutter in the Democratic primary.
The Black Panther flier was one of two anonymous leaflets, both criticizing Nutter, to appear in the closing days of the campaign.
It shows six black males stripping off their clothes in front of two white police officers, with their guns drawn.
"Welcome to the Reality of Mike Nutter's 'Stop and Frisk' Philly," the flier says. "If he's elected mayor of Philadelphia, Mike Nutter will institute a controversial 'stop and frisk' program that will give police unlimited powers to stop and search any citizen, for any reason - or no reason - at all. A vote for Nutter is a vote for racial profiling. A vote for Nutter is a vote against our civil rights."
The leaflet itself contained no information on its origin. But the Ethics Board found the company that printed it and traced the leaflet to St. Hill, who now runs RCS Diversified Consultants, and was an aide to the late U.S. Rep. Lucien Blackwell .
In sworn testimony last summer, St. Hill told the Ethics Board he spent at least $8,800 of his own money to print 125,000 copies of the flier and pay 25 or 30 people to distribute it on Election Day, in North and West Philadelphia.
In a filing yesterday in Common Pleas Court, the Ethics Board identified $22,500 in payments from the electricians' political-action committee to St. Hill and RCS within two months of the flier's printing.
On the PAC's financial reports, the payments were described as "GOTV" - the term normally used to describe "get out the vote" activities on Election Day.
Also, the union paid $49,000 to RCS from the union's Job Recovery Account. And St. Hill received another $15,000 in October from Philadelphia Phuture, a PAC run by Dougherty's daughter, Erin.
There you have it. The guy who produced the ugly and unattributed campaign flier against Michael Nutter received tons of dollars from the Johnny Doc PAC, but he claims it had no influence on his actions. What a whiney excuse. Next St. Hill is going to be posing as a Republican and playing footsie in a men's room or something. I GUARANTEE Johnny Doc had his hands on that dirty trick in last year's mayoral campaign. I GUARANTEE. It may never come out in court, but only because Johnny Doc will stonewall the Ethics Board's attempts to figure it out. That's the big thing here. We do not need a man serving Philadelphia's interest in Harrisburg who holds such contempt for ethics that he will not answer inquiries from the Ethics Board. Simple as that. I also GUARANTEE, when it comes down to it, that Johnny Doc will claim he did not know anything about St. Hill's dirty trick fliers, but if anyone believes Johnny Doc didn't know, they are completely fooling themselves.
But isn't Johnny Doc incompetent, just like tons of Republicans out there? Yeah, I think he's a Republican in Democratic clothing. And here's a bit of his incompetence, guaged by who he's backed recently. From the Philadelphia Inquirer:
The former construction worker's rise to power broker has not been without setbacks.
One of his first candidates, Rick Mariano, a Local 98 member who was elected to City Council in 1995, was convicted of bribery in 2006 and is in prison.
After his ouster as party treasurer, Dougherty supported millionaire Tom Knox in the 2007 mayoral primary, which included Brady and which Michael Nutter won. He also backed Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum in his failed bid to win reelection against Bob Casey in 2006.
Yup, Johnny Doc has tried to be kingmaker in the past, and he's failed. First he backed indicted and convicted Rick Mariano. Then he endorsed Tom Knox, a man who was a good candidate, though not the right man for Philadelphia in this time. It was in service of Tom Knox that Johnny Doc ordered these ugly dirty trciks, no doubt. But Johnny Doc should be completely condemned for supporting Rick Santorum. First, Santorum is anathema to anything Democratic, with both a capital "D" and a small "d." Santorum lost so badly in 2006 because he is completely out of touch not just with the average Pennsylvanian, but also with the average Pennsylvania Republican. Maybe it was Santorum's own ethical lapses that attracted Johnny Doc to him.
I'm not sure how good endorsements are in this city anymore, but it is good to see the Daily News has backed Anne Dicker. I know Anne well, and will be at my polling place working for her on election day. She's a fine person, and there's not a soul out there who could accuse Anne Dicker of ethical lapses. Yeah, Johnny Doc is likely to be indicted in the next few months, if the scuttlebut is right. But we need a clean candidate for change in Philly, and that candidate is Anne Dicker.
Please, folks, even if you are from far from Philly, consider a gift to Anne Dicker's campaign.

PHILADELPHIA – The City’s creative community continues to embrace First Person Arts interactive programming, including the new monthly First Person Salons series, drawing dedicated and enthusiastic audiences. Held at the Gershman Y (401 S. Broad Street) from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on second Wednesdays, the multi-disciplinary Salons showcase cutting edge original works by local artists. Credited with breathing new life into the salon phenomenon, Philadelphia Metro reports, “The concept of the salon…carries with it a whiff of the old-fashioned, of bewigged 18th-century Frenchmen gathered around a harpsichord arguing philosophy. But the idea has come back into vogue of late, with [First Person Salons], a series…intending to foster a sense of community between artists.” The April 9th Salon will feature an exciting and diverse lineup of artists utilizing photography, sculpture, dance, interdisciplinary arts, theatre, and film to push the boundaries of memoir and documentary arts through a variety of mediums.
Local photographer Jacques-Jean (JJ) Tiziou and sculptor James Peniston will join audiences in a discussion about their new joint venture How Philly Moves, a proposed public art installation celebrating Philadelphia dance. Tiziou, who has made his mark photographing performance artists in Philadelphia and beyond, is thrilled to collaborate with Peniston, whose latest sculpture – a nine-foot bust of Benjamin Franklin commissioned by the City – is now on permanent display in Girard Fountain Park (4th and Arch Streets) in Philadelphia's historic Old City neighborhood.
Filmmaker David Andrew Watson will present Down the Hatch: The Life of Red Stuart, his new documentary about the life of the world’s oldest living sideshow artist and sword swallower who came to prominence in the heyday of the American circus. Artist Nicole Bindler will perform Norman: A Moving Monologue, an improvisational work incorporating dance and storytelling to celebrate the life and memories of her father, Norman.
Rounding out the diverse group is storyteller and theater artist Miss Koco, who will present Pieces of Koco, a follow-up to her presentation at February’s Salon in which she gave audience members personal objects she collected throughout the years. Now, she will explore the newfound lives of these objects she parted with along with stories collected through her Upcycled Memories letter project.

Comic Energy proudly presents their annual "MarchAmania!", Saturday night March 29th at Doc Watson's Pub (216 S. 11th Street) beginning at 7pm.
The troupe is currently very busy, performing weekly on South Street and monthly performances at both Doc Watson's Pub and the new Paddywhacks location at 150 South Street (beginning on April 4th).
Coming off a very successful Shubin Theater run titled "A Cruise To Nowhere!", the group is looking to get back to the popular in your face slap stick humor that has made Comic Energy, 'The Attitude of Philly'.
"It's very exciting, MarchAmania has historically been one of my favorite shows to put together", says director James Daly.
And put together well, as Daly mentions that this show is a complete team effort.
"It's no longer about just putting a script in someone's hands and saying...okay, show me what you got. We do countless revisions in our rehearsals to make sure we get it right."
This performance is a continuation of the sketch comedy troupe's 8th season in Philadelphia which concludes in May.
This current Comic Energy cast has quite a mix of characters from the leader JD Daly to young performers like Danielle Jackson add veterans that build a big presence such as Johnny Smith and Zac Ross, a standup comedian in Katie Horahan and Comic Energy favorites Mike Ford, James Reagan and Frank Fral; and you have what Daly says a recipe for success.
"MarchAmania" will be performed Saturday night March 29th at Doc Watson's Pub beginning at 7pm with an encore and a longer version of the performance coming to Paddywhacks the following Friday (April 4th).

It's often seen that a somewhat limited income earner has a tendency to find difficulty in buying a brand new new. One reason might be their limited income or perhaps the sky high prices of new cars. Maybe even due to the reason that they do not want to utilize their savings. In situations such as that a used vehicle loan can be a very useful source in purchasing a car.
Used vehicle loans are typically available in two forms which are:
1. A secured used vehicle loan
2. An Unsecured used vehicle loan
Each of the two forms have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. A secured used vehicle finance can offer comparatively competitive interest rates and are specifically designed in order to meet the needs of each asset holder. On the other hand, a unsecured used vehicle loan are generally targeted to all tenants and those other asset holders that are not willing to place collateral themselves.
Any type of asset or bank paper of a certain value can be used as collateral against the used vehicle loan amounts. Sometimes a vehicle in and of itself can act as collateral for a used vehicle financing.
It's often true that a secured from of used vehicle loans offer a certain advantage but with that it also carries the risk of losing the asset that is placed as collateral. However, such risks arise occasionally and that is generally on the occasions of non repayment of any monthly installment. On the other hand, an unsecured form of used vehicle loans carry no risk to assets since no assets are involved but the rate of interest that you would be paying is typically much higher.
In secured used vehicle loans, the person may borrow up to the amount of equity in collateral. The factors like your credit score, financial situation, employment proofs, income proof, and more, are taken into consideration when determining the interest rate of a unsecured used vehicle auto loan.
High down payments that are made always help in procuring a used car loan with competitive rates. The credit score of the person carries great importance so that a person with a good credit score is always offered with a great offer and competitive rates. This is because their good credit score gives some assurance to the lender that timely payments will be made and also most lenders prefer dealing with people that have good credit.
Lastly, the factors which the person usually does not remember to consider while buying a car is insurance. They must get their automobile insured and it should not be procured from the same financial institution. Rather, it's much better to take it from any other company that specializes in insurance.
With that being said, used vehicle financing will help the person in becoming an car owner without much difficulty. So, don't wait and go get yourself a used vehicle loan to get you the car of your dreams.

Ed Rendell has long been known to play the same old same old political game of destruction. As such, I'm not a huge supporter. But he's a lame duck, so when he does it I don't get all that upset. But I am a huge supporter of Michael Nutter, even endorsing him for Mayor early in the campaign. Michael Nutter ran a good and honest campaign for mayor, standing above the usual ugliness of Philadelphia politics. I'm thinking he's going slightly off the rails with this stunt done in conjunction with Ed Rendell. Here's their silly whine in favor of Hillary Rodham Clinton from the Philadelphia Inquirer:
Gov. Rendell, Mayor Nutter and two of Hillary Rodham Clinton's top aides yesterday blasted Barack Obama's campaign for allegedly diminishing and disrespecting Pennsylvania's presidential primary.
In a national conference call with reporters, the foursome pointed to a memorandum written by Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, that referred to Pennsylvania as "only one of ten remaining contests."
Rendell predicted that the description would be "off-putting" to the state's Democratic voters. Nutter called it "one of the silliest things I've seen in recent times."
Mark Penn, Clinton's top strategist, went on to praise the state - the largest yet to vote - as "incredibly vibrant and important" both in the nomination fight and the general election.
Obama's Pennsylvania spokesman, Sean Smith, said the controversy was much ado about nothing, that Obama had every intention of competing for the state's 158 pledged delegates in the voting on April 22.
Guys, Pennsylvania is in fact one of ten primaries left in this country. Both candidates should be focusing on all of those states. You are whining about a fact here. And there isn't any evidence that Obama is treating Pennsylvania with anything but respect. Rendell and Nutter are signing onto some stupid, whiney Hillary Clinton BS, and with Michael Nutter, at least, I am disappointed.
I've talked to Michael Nutter about this race and his endorsement of Hillary Clinton. I had breakfast with him the day after he made that appearance with her to endorse her candidacy here in Philadelphia. I came away thinking Michael Nutter endorsed Mrs. Clinton because of his beliefs, and I respected him for it even though I was leaning heavily to Obama at the time. I imagined Mr. Nutter would campaign for Hillary Clinton, but I was confident he would do so by focusing on the issues. This silly whine that he's signed onto disappoints me a great deal, especially since Mr. Nutter himself campaigned on a unity theme not unlike Barack Obama.
I am saddened Michael Nutter. You can do better.

Owning a vehicle these days is a nececessity of a modern day society since it saves time and cash apart from being convenient in tons of different ways. It's however not very easy to source the finance from your own pocket and the auto loan becomes inevitable. If you happen to be looking for cheaper financing for buying a car, instant car loan online is probably what you're looking for. Instant auto loans online enable you to buy any sort of car including the vehicle of your dreams.
Taking a loan through quick auto loans is beneficial in lots of ways. The loan is approved very quickly, within one working day. The borrower is saved from tons of paper work and time. You have this great luxury of comparing various different fast approval auto loans by applying for one online.
To get yourself a fast approval auto loan is a very easy process. All you are really required to do is to fill out an online application with lal of the needed information such as your loan amount, your payment duration, your annual income, purpose of the loan you seek, your name, your occupied, and other similar informations. The online lending institution will then verify the information and if it's found to be legit then the loan will be instantly approved for you.
Another step that you need to take is choosing between the secured or unsecured versions of instant approval auto loans online. The secured option comes with the collateral offered by the borrower. Any sort of property like a home or even the vehicle itself can be offered as collateral for your loan. You are able to take any amount of secured money depending on the equity of the collateral that you are presenting. What's more is that, the secured loan is more easily taken at a lower rate of interest. Even monthly payment durations are kept flexible to suit the person getting the loan.
Unsecured auto loans online do not require any sort of collateral, which makes the loan a risk free option for the borrower. The lender however, may end up asking for proof of your annual income and your overall financial position to be certain that payment capacity for the borrower is up to their standards. The loan is then offered at a higher rate of interest with smaller amounts of time for the payment duration. So the unsecured loan is clearly best suited for buying a low priced automobile.
In the case of having bad credit, you can still get yourself an instant car loan online without having too many worries. Just be sure to show the lender that you seriously intend on paying back the loan in a timely manner. Show him your monthly payment capacity in the form of your annual income or your financial profile and be ready for a sound payment plan.
Quick Car loans online give you easy access to required finances for owning the car of your dreams, but before settling for that deal, be sure to take note of the different aspects of it especially the interest rate that you are being quoted. Always compare the various loans that you are offered for the easiest terms and conditions that are you presented to you. Pay off the isntallemtns in time to avoid your debt.

The Q&A session for the Great Expectations Agenda meeting for the 1st Council District started off with a bang asking the councilmen whether or not they supported spot zoning. The questioner wanted the councilmen to deny all spot zoning requests until a full plan was in place. The 1st District's Councilman Frank DiCicco took to the mic first. He said that he views all zoning requests on a case by case basis and to deny all spot zoning requests between now and the finalization of a zoning plan is too broad a move to make. At-Large Councilman Bill Green said that it would be great to be able to hold everything until a plan was in place, but it's just not feasible. He pointed out to Miami's recent new zoning plan; it took them 3 years to finalize and their city is 1/5 the size of Philadelphia. Green gave a drop dead date of 2011 (the same year as his re-election bid) for a plan to be in place. If a new zoning plan which pleased the majority of Philadelphians were in place before the elections, I foresee a slew of re-elections - zoning is at the top of people's minds all across the city.

I jumped at the opportunity to attend the Great Expectations Agenda meeting in my own City Council district, the First. This meeting was the biggest of the district meetings to date with about 70 - 75 people in all. This event was at the Daily News - Inquirer Building so there was plenty of space. I was happy to see a bunch of City Year corps members in attendance. Their red Timberland jackets have become a common sight for my eyes during my time in Philly. This was also the first district meeting with Asians (aside from myself) in the audience. There was a good mix of young and old (about 40% - 60%) so I'm sure a good range of opinions and experiences were raised in each group. The Inquirer's Chris Satullo announced that 1st District Councilman Frank DiCicco would be there as well as, once again, At-Large City Councilman Bill Green. UPenn's Harris Sokoloff polled the crowd to see how many had been to previous Great Expectations events; about 60% had. He asked how many had been to any of the Penn Praxis events; about 40% had. The people at this event knew what was going on and what the project was trying to accomplish.
I jumped in with Group B for the breakout session. Covered by the dozen in the session were the topics of Crime, Poverty and Transporation. The group had members actively involved in the issues they chose to talk about including Ellen who hasn't owned a car since the 1950s, Aqila, a City Year corps member from DC who was appalled by SEPTA after moving to Philly and Debi and Dick who were active in the homeless community.
Judith, a transplant from Hungary, wondered why Philadelphia seems to have the problems it does while other cities don't. Across the table, Kirk pointed out that it's the notion that Philadelphia is worse off than other cities is often reported in the city's papers more so, perhaps, than in other cities leading to the perception that Philly's worse off. He pointed to Mayor Nutter's remarks during the Citizen's Convention where he asked that the papers report more on the good things that happen in the city as well as the bad. Doing so can give the people hope. Debi was concerned with constantly reinventing the wheel with each administration. She wanted to find out what was working and what could be working better with additional funding instead of scrapping everything and starting all over again. Ellen wanted to know what was going on with the new program for businesses to hire ex-offenders with the benefit of a $10k tax write off from the City. Aqila wanted to see the programs targeting high school aged kids to be introduced at the middle school level. Working in high schools in Philly, she's seen first hand how it's too late for many.

How can any worker or small business person vote for Hillary ? She is using her reverse stand on NAFTA as a spin. Free trade has a much longer history and she was there during these times. She was there during the most massive dislocation of jobs in U.S. history while millions were losing their jobs and small businesses and she did nothing. She said nothing. Here is one account from a published letter in the Cleveland Plain Dealer....
Hillary Clinton's convenient turnabout on NAFTA and free trade

Cleveland Plain Dealer Letters Editorial Page
Voters are shopping their jobs away at places like Wal-Mart and now are vot ing their jobs away by supporting Hillary Clinton. Here is the real timeline behind free trade:
1956 - U.S. government starts moving factories outside the United States.
1970 - 120 factories moved from the United States to Mexico.
1980 - 400 maquiladora factories in Mexico.
1980s - While Hillary Clinton was on the Board of Directors of Wal-Mart, about 1,000 U.S. factories were moved to Mexico.
1992 - 2,000 maquiladora factories in Mexico.
1994 - NAFTA is passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress and signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton; number of factories moved to Mexico doubles to more than 4,000; reports tell of "dirty manufacturing" in Mexico causing health problems and birth defects.
1995 - President Clinton rushes $20 billion to save the Mexican economy. Then he uses other means to rush even more money to Mexico. ( President asked Congress for $40 billion but they gave him just $20 billion instead- he said he would use other means to get the extra money to bail out the Mexican peso )
