Help Put Together: Hurricane Katrina Benefit Concert in Philadelphia

I crossposted this to my own blog...

Last night while mulling what to post, a novel idea popped into my head.

Philadelphia should have a Hurricane Katrina benefit concert.

If you've been watching the news, then you know NBC is planning one for a national audience.

But that doesn't mean Philadelphia can't help too. Take Operation Brotherly Love, organized by KYW and it's sister radio and tv stations - in a few hours, the station had raised over $300,000.

And as it's coming out more and more in the blogs, every little bit helps.

So this is what I want to do.

I'm going to try to organize this as best as I can - but I need your help.

In a little bit I'm going to be sending out an e-mail to Philadelphia bloggers and other people that I think can help with this endeavor.

If you want to be involved and you think you can help, please e-mail me at tulin@politicsphilly.com. That's tulin@politicsphilly.com.

I will be in touch with you in the next 24 hours if you e-mail me.

Most important things to consider:

  • Bands
If you have a band or has a friend that with a band that would like to be involved - e-mail me. I don't expect to get "big" names, but that doesn't matter. Philadelphia has a rich and diverse musical community and I have no doubt they'll be able to fill the bill
  • Volunteers
I can't organize and do this on my own. I need help. Please e-mail me at tulin@politicsphilly.com to get involved. /Everyone/ matters in this.
  • Charity
Where should the funds we raise be sent to? In a few days, I'm going to put up a poll to this effect. I need you to e-mail me with suggestions (Red Cross, ASPCA, etc) of places that the funds should go to.I want to give 100% or as close as possible to the selected charity.
  • Venue
Where can we hold this? E-mail (or comment) suggestions for places you think would appropriate.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We have the chance to really make a difference.

Please use this post to trade ideas. Comment. Discuss. The more people involved, the better!

And remember, please e-mail me at tulin@politicsphilly.com to help.

This is a terrific idea. Lets get this going.

Start an Ask Metafilter thread

Tulin, I bet if you posted to Ask Metafilter on how to start a concert like this - you will get a ton of help. Lets get a conversation going there as well.

I've already used up my 1

I've already used up my 1 question a week in the green because of a situation with a credit card. I think I still have 3 days before I can post again!

Tell me what you want asked...

And I will post the question for you.

hmmmmm

maybe you could do it in conjunction with Project Brotherly Love and let the contributions go through them. That might provide some assistance in publicizing the event (and maybe free use of a venue) as well.

RE: Concert- What about the Philly Faves that Play on XPN, etc?

Hey what about Jim Boggia and old 4 way street gang? They did it for Tsunami, get 'em here.....they ALWAYS draw a crowd...I would suggest bugging XPN to truly go not for profit...make them help...they COULD if they wanted do a live radio telethon when this concert takes place!

Also, talk to Jessie & the guys who ran the Point in Bryn Mawr, http://www.pointentertainment.com/ , could help you.

Cornerstone Management in Bryn Mawr still reps Eric Bazilian from the Hooters & he should be home from European Tour soon....

And Ardmore's own Brownie's 23 East knows bands galore...Just call Joe the owner & ask him... http://www.brownies23east.com/ is the web site gateway to both brownie's (Ardmore & University City)

Also, hit the jazz clubs up for suggestions...can't have enough jazz...it is the ultimate tribute to New Orleans....
