Hoping to Roll Out the Red Carpet

The old CAPA buildingChris at Rowhouse Logic offers a glimpse at one neighborhood that is slated to host incoming refugees from Hurricane Katrina. Particularly, he scopes out the old Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts at 11th and Catherine. Here's a sample of his thoughts:

... The refugees will be spread out over a couple of city and school district buildings. The two I know about are in North Philadelphia and in Bella Vista. Without question, this is going to be a budgetary hit for a city that can’t take many, but it is unquestionably the right thing to do. Hopefully some more information will be available in the coming days so that people with special skills from the area can donate time and expertise. Computer geeks, tutors, teachers, mental health professionals etc, will probably all be needed, so get ready to answer the call. ... (source)

He hopes, as many of us do, that residents of the neighborhood will show their new neighbors a warm welcome. He's also touting a few pictures of the site.

Go on over and read the rest of Chris' excellent post

UPDATE: Autumn points out the volunteer registration form at the Phila.gov website -- in case anyone feels inspired to help roll out the red carpet a bit more personally.

how to volunteer
