Dear Friends,

Our drive to Save The Lunch is nearly complete. It has been a long road, full of peaks and valleys. But in the end, the results will be worth the journey. The new Lunch, which will open this Monday, December 12th, will be bigger and better than ever. You will love their sharp new decor. And the new layout will be even more "sociable" with its L-Shaped counter, nooks, corners and café tables.

Recently, the Fausts gave a beautiful preview reception to show their appreciation for those who contributed to the fund-raising conducted by Friends of Gladwyne Lunch. The event was like a reunion of old friends, most of whom had not seen each other since the old Lunch closed its doors last August. It was apparent that without the Lunch to bring us together, we had lost our connections to many friends and neighbors.

Standing there at the reception, enjoying the company of friends and neighbors, it struck me-- this is exactly what we've been working to save ! It was not about the food. It was not about the building. It was all about the people, the village-- and about our sense of being connected... It was about preserving the spirit of community, friendship and hospitality that the Village Lunch has brought to Gladwyne for the past 60 years.

Judging by the massive support we received in trying to save the lunch, the hunger for these points of connection is strong and widespread. In the final tally, we enlisted the support of thousands of people, raised over $12,000 in voluntary contributions and motivated many to pitch in and lend a hand in the construction process. It has been a heart-warming display of support from the community and for the community. I like to think of it as an old-time barn-raising-- Gladwyne style.

I am privileged to have been able to play a role in this effort. However, it was not me alone. It took a village to save the Lunch. The list of people who helped is a long one. And we must also admire and appreciate the perseverance of Bill and Laura Faust in their efforts to regroup and rebuild.

I want to especially acknowledge the incredibly dedicated efforts of Rob Schall and Jay Smith. Nothing could have happened without their talents and unstoppable enthusiasm for the project. We were a small team with a tall task. The result was more than any one of us could have accomplished alone.

And thanks to you, for helping make this all possible. After all is said and done, I hope that-- in some small way-- we have helped Gladwyne preserve a piece of what makes it such a special place.

Now, I look forward to seeing life in Gladwyne return to normal. I look forward to seeing all of you soon in the New Gladwyne Village Lunch.

Best Regards,

Jay Butera
