Nonviolence is not servile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation. Sooner or later, all people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace.
-Martin Luther King Jr.
That's the leading quote for Vernon Clark's story in yesterday's Inquirer ("King Day brings call for recommitment"). Philly.com also has video from a 1967 speech to Philadelphia school students, which is fairly short and well worth watching.
Yes, it's Martin Luther King Day here in Philly. And what are we doing to observe the occasion? The 11th Annual Day of Service is one great way to honor the spirit of the day. Meanwhile, there will also be a King Day Celebration at Longwood Gardens.
Have you written a post about it (perhaps taking Jane's suggestion)? Have you planned something special to honor Rev. King's legacy? Is there some special recollection or inspiration you gather from the occasion or from King's message? What does this day mean to you? Do you have any thoughts on these AP poll results touting the progress of American race relations?
If you want to share thoughts along those lines, please feel free to trackback to this post from your related blog post, or simply leave a comment here with your thoughts.
UPDATE: Jane has started a post to note others participating in her faith/politics theme for MLK Day. You can also read her post on that subject here.
