As congressional negotiations over immigration reform collapse, the people themselves prepare to take to the streets on Monday, April 10.
Philadelphia will join at least 70 other cities in speaking out against anit-immigrant legislation like the Sensenbrenner-King (HR 4437).
Watch the press conference for the rally Quicktime, WMV.

Immigration
I am for immigration rights. However, I am fiercely opposed to Illegal Immigration. The difference, you'll notice, is those who are here 'Illegally'.
They are a burden to our society, and our economy. They do NOT merely take the jobs no one wants. I do not remember any Job shortage in the 'menial-work' category before any illegal immigrants came here. To believe that is nonsense. What they do is give the employer the ability to pay same wage to the Illegals, without the added cost of paying taxes that they would normally for a LEGAL worker. Hence, they take jobs from Legal citizens..AND hurt the economy (buy not paying taxes).
Please, take a economy course, anyone who believes we should just give them all Amnesty. Oh, and look at France.. who are some years ahead of us in the SAME predicament. How are THEY coping with granting Work-Status to the illegals??? Ship Them Out! Stay in Mexico, and make you OWN country better..have some pride.
Immigrant Rights
Cheap labor at all costs? We have seen in France what happens. http://www.jadecastle.com
corporations
It is the corporations that have decided to use illegal workers and are the ones willingly driving down the wages all across America as a result. Get mad at them, not at the people trying to make a better life for themselves and their families; for them, these wages are far higher than the wages they can make across the border, if there are any jobs there in the first place.
Let's talk about forcing Bush and Fox to start thinking about getting jobs for Mexicans in Mexico and getting back to a sustainable agricultural economy, something they had not too long ago.
The employers can pay a minimum wage to Americans [I'd prefer a living wage, but let's start at the dinky $5.15 min for now], but they choose to eschew that and pay what, $3/hr?
A wall does nothing to solve the actual problems of a lack of a stable economy in Mexico and the issue of corporations paying a federally mandated minimum wage here. The corporations are the ones that should pay for their wrongs.
marches
FYI- Feeder marches are starting in West Philly [not sure the exact locations, PhillyIMC may have that] and Chinatown at 11a or so and will lead into Love Park by Noon.
You touched on something here
Good observation, Albert.
Immigration reform cannot seal our borders. That brand of thinking is akin to our wildly successful "war on drugs" -- er, wait, I guess that whole "cut off supply, but ignore demand" argument hasn't been working so well, has it.
True reform is probably going to require a re-working of both immigration and employment law, because as long as employers have the incentive, the problem will be ongoing. The Sensenbrenner-King ideas miss at least half the point of reforming the laws -- it just looks like a hapless attempt to prey on the fears of the uninformed.

Semantics & Mis-Guided Angst...
Negotiations are not over "Immigration" they are dealing with Illegal Immigration ...which, incidentally, is a felony.
As far as I know, no one is against immigration and VISA application...
Here's my question, if people really cared about the illegals, they wouldn't want them making the very harrowing and life threatening charge over the border and wouldn't want them dealing with the documented "Rape trees"... so why aren't all these people protesting Mexico and Vicente Fox for taking a country dripping in natural resources and tourism and somehow making it such a horrid economy that people will risk death to get out?
And another question...why are there Mexican flags flying and not American ones -when it's Mexico they don't want to go back to and America they want to stay in...? Just Sayin'...

Um... I believe being here
Um... I believe being here illegally is still a misdemeanor. I'll do a little digging on that, but which law are you referring to when you say it's a felony?
Immigration
Most of these people who comment are idiots.let me tell you how this works.I lived in a communist country for 20 years. The borders were sealed nobody came in or out, if you did you were going to be arested and/or end up in some prison for the rest of your days.Even with that risk we had tons of people trying to escape some of them making it and some not.And you're going to seat there and tell me you some redneck who's never been outside his own county is going to stop the human spirit. You know nothing about nothing!!Plus I really don't understand why americans are trying to stop immigration especialy from Mexico, wich is like a labor milking cow for the last 20 years or so.You think they take the jobs away from you? You're idiots!!A strong economy is a fragile thing and they sustain it for you and you don't even know it.Did you know that the INS since 1986 is been like a brick wall? They play a wicked game like this. They want you to apply for some kind of legal status but they never answer for years and years. You want to have legal immigration?you're idiots again!! You're going to have a bunch of loosers coming into the country, you won't have only the strong and the smart anymore, there only be morons coming here who don't appreciate this country just like in Canada.Let only the ones who can make it here come here.I was one of 30 guys who made it the only one!! These people like me are the people who take the risk in life..like opening a business??!!That's whay America is nr1 in the world in people opening their own business.Beacouse we all have the genes in us of the people who like to take risks. Also that's whay we are more depressed than anyone becouse if we can't make it we feel bad until we do.It's very complex. Not like some redneck thinks--let's ship them all back!! without knowing anything.Living in America illegaly is a nightmare. Many people kill themselfs becouse of that. Why the churches came out in the street too? Becouse of millions of confessions, that's why.And all the desperate prayers. The priests know people's problems. If you will get rid of these onest workers Jesus himself will turn away from you and will choke you in your own selfishnes wich is been taking over this country slowly.it will come naturaly to you like this.Out of 300 million people of the US there are 100 over 50years old, 100 mil. children, a big chink in the armed forces, a big chunk in prisons, a big chunk, business owners, working high jobs, lawyers, doctors and various office work, you got handicaped, sick etc.Basicly you have a handfull left to do the dirty jobs.I know when I use to work in a factory as a programmer, they were trying to get workers on the floor and they couldn't get them, so most of them were immigrants and they were doing a great job.You can't judge somone until you live in their shoes.
