This venerable occasion, once known as "Decoration Day" (for the practice of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers), should be remembered for much more than its pop symbolism as the unofficial start of summer, or for its commercial appeal as a sales holiday. It is, first and foremost, the day set aside to honor those who've lost their lives in service to their country. For a quick history lesson, you can read more about Memorial Day at Wikipedia.
