A comedy troupe will have its audience rolling in the aisles with its newest performance - a skewed view of America - this month.

JUNE 22: The Comic Energy Sketch Comedy Troupe will give its take on American history during a show at the Shubin Theater June 29 to July 2. Shown, from left, are members Walter Threadgill and Laura Zingle, light and sound technician Daniel Quintanilla, founder James Daly, light and sound technician George Vilsaint and member Mike Ford.

When James Daly noticed there was something lacking in his comedy troupe, he immediately got to work.
The funnyman held a meeting with other members in 2004 to discuss the group's direction and how to beef up its former laugh-out-loud acts. The members were on to something when they realized the cast consisted of all men.

At a South Street coffeehouse, Daly and his assistant director came up with a storyline. The same day, they outlined a show on a fake Philadelphia fraternity named XXXX.

Characters were created, each possessing their own quirks: Jared Droughan was the frat's leader who lacked intelligence; Frisbee was the nerd; Fish was the drinker; and Francis was the resident sex "expert."

One of the skits has the guys fervently trying to get into a club that attracts hordes of women. After attempting to entice them by dancing to "Time of the Season" by the Zombies, the eager group forces their way into the bar. Initially happy with the feat, they soon realize the watering hole serves a lesbian clientele.

The skit is one of Daly's favorites to date, one that reaffirmed and reenergized his creative side.

"Just when you think you're down in the gutter, you pull yourself right back up," Daly, of 21st and Jackson streets, said. "That's something we've been able to do."
