Giving Mr. Movie His Due

In yesterday's Daily News, Stu Bykofsky ran a nice piece about the longest-running talkradio host in Philadelphia. It's about Steve Friedman (a.k.a. Mr. Movie), who has been in the fight of his life for the past couple years.

As a frequent listener to his radio show, I've always been amazed by his continually upbeat demeanor, even before I first heard him mention his kidney failure on the air a while back. It's hard to imagine the pain he must be enduring even as he responds to his callers in gracious tones seldom heard on talkradio these days. He's a true cinema expert who's never felt the need to put down those with whom he disagrees. I've often wished more movie critics could be as down-to-earth as he is.

If you're unfamiliar with Mr. Movie but want a hint of the kind of person he is, click here to read Byko's tribute to a local living legend.

You can hear Mr. Movie on 1210 AM, Saturday nights from 10 pm to 1 am. Additionally, he does movie reviews online at funplaydates.com (family-focused reviews) and at mrmovie.com (for a wider variety of films).

MrMovie

Steve Friedman, aka MrMovie is a phoney! It is truly an ACT how he treats people. He only wants attention and pity.

I've met him, and it doesn't

I've met him, and it doesn't seem like an act to me. Even if it were an act, as long as he treats people well, that's still a good thing. Jeez...

Nice Guy

I've had the pleasure of knowing and at times working with Steve Friedman "Mr. Movie" over the past 20 years, and he is without a doubt a down-to-earth and genuinely nice person. That hasn't changed since he became ill. Any on-air mention of his kidney disease is for the purpose of either thanking listeners for their get-well wishes or to bring added awareness to the disease. The only thing that could bother some people is that Steve tends to give his honest opinions, both in-person and on-air, but I find that refreshing compared to the carefully packaged on-air personalities you find on radio and TV today. I'd much rather listen to a real person with real opinions, even if I don't agree with him all the time. In fact, Steve welcomes differing opinions, which is one of many reasons why his show is always entertaining. I hope he regains his health so he can share his friendship and vast movie knowledge with us for many years to come.

He is a phoney.

Steve Friedman is the most vain man I have ever met. OH, "I'm not an egomaniac, I'm a movie maniac" What a bunch of bull - he is the biggest egomaniac I have ever met. This is just one of the example of his phoniness. He sits there and tries to spout off stupid stuff he remembers, that no one else cares about. But, week in and week out, it is the same stuff. Oh, I forgot, everyone is his "Old Buddy". I thank God, I am not his old buddy. Whether you feel sorry for him because he is dying, thats OK, but do not confuse your pity with his being a "real person". He is lazy, jealous, vain and egotistical. Steve's only friend is himself, actually he is in love with himself. Make me want to vommit. Boy, did he go NUTS, when the radio station moved his time slot. The only reason he is on the air is because he fills the last and least important time slot of the week. He acts like he is friends to the host before him(Steve & Jimmy, but he hates them for taking his time slot. Why do you think he shows up early every week? His show or not, he should keep his stupid daughter OFF the air. But with all this said, I love my "old buddy".

Who are you?

I'm always tickled by the abundance of people who take anonymous shots at others who don't get to benefit from the cloak of anonymity. If you're going to trash a guy (assuming the mud you sling is true), could you at least sign your work?

Honored to be his friend

Steve Friedman, aka "Mr. Movie", is the most sincere, compassionate, down-to-earth, caring, self-effacing man I have ever met. His honesty and love for his fellow human beings soars high above his concerns for his own well-being. He is amazing in that after all he's been going through the past few years, he is always upbeat and would never DREAM of taking his listeners, or anyone, down while wallowing in ANY kind of self-pity.
I've never met a more "giving" person. He gives everything of himself to his legions of loyal listeners and to his many, many friends who have nothing but the greatest respect and love for him. It honors me to be considered his friend.

Mr Movie

Well, you must be Michelle, his wife, or Laurie his wife's best friend. Because you are blinded by your own compassion. Self effacing, what a joke. He is sooooooooooooooooo vain, it makes me want to puke. He may be giving to the legions of his fans, that is if you consider his audience of 6 to be a legion. I am honored NOT to be his friend. The two-faced, lazy, bastard.

I was saddened to read some of the comments vilifying Mr. Steve Friedman. Even though I have never met "Mr. Movie", I cannot accept as true such angry and uncharitable remarks. Their author sounds like a deeply disturbed soul, full of anger and arrogance. I have never heard Mr. Movie speak so on the air whenever I have tuned in to hear him. He has always been polite, considerate and thoughtful. I admire his courage, living with his disease and yet being so patient with people when they call. I like it when he has his daughter on; I like the fact that he comes across first and foremost as a family man.
I wanted to say how disappointed I have been that Mr. Movie's timeslot was moved. The previous men are nice, but I am weary of hearing about old Philly.
I used to listen to more of WPHT, but I have come to tire of their talk jocks. I have since gone over to WNTP and been all the happier. For me, Bill Bennett has it all over Michael Smerconish. The latter seems so full of himself, rather arrogant and sometimes rude to people. (Who cares about Pink Floyd anyway? It was my generation, but I've heard music that is so much better.) Dr. Bennett has real depth to his program, is interesting and has a real undertanding of current events. I'd rather hear Laura Ingraham than Glenn Beck, whom I used to enjoy until Mr. Beck took some gratuitous pot-shots at the Roman Catholic Church, of which he used to be a member. I guess he can plead ignorance of actual Church teaching for the most part. Laura is smart and witty and I see her moving up and overtaking Mr. Beck one day. They have other great hosts, too: Dennis Praegher, Michael Medved, Hugh Hewitt, Mark Levin and others.
So, there came to be only two people that I tuned in to hear on WPHT: Mr. Movie on Saturday nights and Matt Drudge on Sundays. Sid Mark is also good, but I can take only so much Sinatra and I do also like to hear the Phillies games. Dom Giordano is good at times, too.
Now that Drudge is gone (and I miss him!), there was only Mr. Movie and now his time slot has been moved. I wish they'd put him back and SOON!!

Mr. Movie Rocks

I love Mr. Movie's show. He's very knowlegdable and I learn a lot. I don't care so much for those guys going on an on about old times in Philly. I can't take them at all. The only reason I listen at all is because Mr. Movie sometimes gets in on the discussion.

As for Smerconish, I agree with the above comment concerning his rudeness. I can't take him or his egotism. I listen to my iPod instead during the morning drive now and am much happier.
