Philadelphia News and Views YOU Write - Urbi et Orbi

What is the Philly Featured Blog Storm?

Here's the deal folks - It's hard to get heard on the web. No matter what some folks might tell you, the blogosphere isn't flat.

That's a lie some perpetrate to encourage your participation and find ways to make money from it. That's a lie some perpetrate out of some mistaken idealism. That's a lie that keeps people from being heard - when they should be heard.

We a feature a different blog here on Philly Future every two weeks to combat the self-reinforcing flows of influence on the web. To highlight a voice that should be heard - whether we or you agree with that voice or not.

Writers who highlight their personal lives, their favorite sports teams, entertainment, music, politics. We attempt to bring it to you.

It's a Philly thing.

But that's not enough. We can't, alone, push the peanut forward and here goes where you can play a part.

This is a call for you, the Philly Future community, to visit, comment on, and link to featured blogs.

Say what you will about them. Say you hate what you find on them. That you love them and plan to bookmark them.

But do so - and do so ON YOUR independent BLOGS. Not here on PF.

Let us know in the current Featured Blog thread - we will update our post so that folks know what you have to say.

Ping Technorati, so that it is aware of your post, and you've helped the rest of the web become more aware of that featured blog.

Tag your posts with the phillyfeaturedblog tag by adding the following HTML:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/phillyfeaturedblog" rel="tag">phillyfeaturedblog</a>

In the future, pinging Technorati, and tagging your posts will be enough - we will pull new links to the current featured blog from its services and present them here.

Lets highlight the writers, artists, activists, and individuals in our town - to the world - together.

Blogstorm!

Karl,
Thank you for the mention (and for the great post at Paradox1x on the myth of the "flat" web).
I think the blogstorm proposal is a awesome idea.

Thanks for the kind word

A few headlines on the home page of PF isn't enough to spread word of any one site here.

But all together? Well I'd imagine that to boost anyone's rank in various search engines, and better yet, within certain conversations.

I took the idea from you, so take a bow :)

Hopefully this gains some traction and we can help the community out collectively. But it will only work if others join in.

Taking Advantage of non-traditional benefits

You know how you might have a benefit in your package (for those who are lucky to have benefits), that you might not use? I'm not talking contributing to the 401k or stock option. But let's say, you get x number of dollars a month for gym membership or perhaps a computer equipment purchase or perhaps it's something like tuition reimbursement. But after the first "orientation" you forget it's there?

You let it sit there and it "goes to waste". Karl, I think you are correct that perhaps the "community" doesn't take ENOUGH advantage of things like the featured blog or perhaps the Blogger Meet-up, etc. I know in some cases that some blogs are more specfic so discussing something OFF-TOPIC breaks the flow of the source. So what can a Phillies blogger do when a featured blogger is discussion something like politics or raising children?

Now for me... it's no big deal because I've decided to have
30 blogs
that I don't update regulary. :) But at least I have off topic options!!!

So I still think there needs to be something more to highlight the featured blog. Not criticism PhillyFuture (I don't think so) perhaps it's just my way of "working" Philly Future that I'm not interacting with the featured blog well enough??

I try to make sure I vote each week, and I take some care to review each blog before voting. (I don't nominate blogs NOR do I ever nominate my own.) Perhaps I should I don't know.

But I like that you raised the discussion! And I'll take this opportunity to help out...

Unless I forget. :)

Wow

And I thought I was bad with the number of sites I'm involved in!

We need many, many more folks nominating. Too few people collectively decide who gets to be heard online, and each of us has the capability of opening up the discussion further by letting others know who our favorites are.

Linking to the latest featured blog, at that blog's URL, will help get it some visibility in Google and help your online community, which is different then Philly Future's, now about it.

It's kinda a pay-it-forward approach. If each of us take part, we can do much to promote the Philadelphia scene.
