Empty Sky

News Item:
Group files suit to stop 9-11 memorial

Liberty State Park, along the Hudson River, in New Jersey, is where the memorial is to be built. The site for the memorial [called Empty Sky] is opposite lower Manhatten, where the World Trade Center once stood, and aligns itself across the river with that location. The 'Friends of Liberty State Park' claim construction of the memorial will block their view of the New York City skyline, which means their gripe is most likely about property value.

Looking at the layout of the project on the FSA website [linked below], I just don't see it. Overall height of the memorial tops out at 30 feet, and it sits on the water's edge in the park, quite a distance from any residential dwelling, far enough from the nearest hi-rise that seeing beyond it is no problem. Makes one wonder what is really behind the complaint.

Cartoon from Sid in the City

So?

Sounds like a local zoning issue that some partisans are eager (yet again) to trample the corpses of 9/11 for some short-term political gain. You're not one of those people, are you?

Seems like a perfectly appropriate place to me (I've been there post 9/11). But I don't live there either, so I think my opinion is moot.

re: So?

Me? Political gain? Lol - Most politicians can't be very successful by honestly saying what's on their minds, so I probably wouldn't do too well in that arena - Frank Rizzo Sr, though, never pulled any punches, and Ed Rendel always struck me as pretty straight forward - I really liked both those guys, old time corruption allegations aside - As far as the memorial is concerned, the design was accepted back in 2004, being chosen from 320 after a well publicized competition - If there was no uproar then, why a lawsuit now, 3 years after the fact? - Again, you and I seem to agree, so perhaps the world is coming to an end - I'm pretty sure though you'll absolutely hate the next Sid cartoon [coming soon, Gore and Kerry], so things should go back to an even keel :)

Don't you think Gore and

Don't you think Gore and Kerry as targets are too easy? I mean, the guys aren't even running for anything? Try to break a sweat in your comedy - don't take the easy way out.

re: Don't you think Gore

Oh they are soooo easy, they're like 'gimmies', but everything isn't about politics, you don't have to be running for office to be a target - Just this month alone, if you go back through the website, I've taken shots at Ambien, Lunesta, Gay porn, Protestors, Iran, Bin Laden, Walter Reed, Homeland Security, Saudi Arabia, Monica Malpass, Offensive language, Antonella Barba, Feng Shui, Astrology, High school rowdies, the Anna Nicole circus, The Taliban, James Cameron, the Confederacy, Al Gore [admittedly twice], John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, and today's only the 20th of the month, so the political jabs are really in the minority if you take a head count - You are right about one thing though, for all of the above, I didn't have to break a sweat for any of 'em.
