Projects Gallery proudly presents Tom Judd’s solo exhibition “The New World”. This exciting exhibition features Judd’s new work, including a 6 x 15 foot painting entitled “The New World”, from which the show is named. Utilizing his mixed media approach, Judd has created a bold and audacious body of work. While still crafting his serene images rife with nostalgia, this new work is more lyrical and immediate than we have seen before. His material choice of found images and textures, layered with his painterly application, still feel distinctly personal yet simultaneously collective.

“The New World” opens Friday April 6th, with a First Friday artist reception from 5-9 p.m., as well as a second Thursday reception April 12th from 5-9 p.m. The exhibition continues through April 29th.
For those who have followed Judd’s long and illustrious career, this new work will surprise and delight. Evoking the romantic scenery of hand-painted murals and misplaced landscapes, these new paintings are lively and provocative. Utilizing memorabilia from a vast collection of “recycled debris,” Judd instills in the viewer a sense of déjà vu. Rendered with the hand of a truly talented painter, Judd creates tableaus that are both mysterious and strangely familiar.
According to Judd, "I think of my work as recycled imagery that is appropriated and reused in a different context than was originally intended."

A propjet airliner superimposed on a map, an intertwining vine over old wallpaper of a similar pattern, birds perched on pages of lunar maps, and pastoral landscapes become the backdrops for these haunting yet beautiful works. This multitude of images that Judd puts into play suggests the eclectic nature of our lives and the hidden recollections we have about our past. Soft tones and gentle hands lead us back to a place we forgot to remember.
Originally from New Jersey, the artist’s family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah when Judd was two years old. He attended the University of Utah before taking a leave of absence to travel throughout Europe. He then went on to earn his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art. With an artistic career spanning nearly 30 years, the artist has maintained an impressive exhibition schedule. He has had 5 one-person shows in New York and 4 solo museum shows (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Salt Lake Art Center, The Nevada Museum of Art). He has shown extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, and his works are included in several major corporate and museum collections.
