America's Hometown reminds us:

It's a great time to remember (as Friedman mentions) that more money spent at locally-owned businesses tends to stay in the local economy than when we spend it at remotely-owned chain stores.

I figure a campaign like this could use all the attention it can get. I often lament the dominance of chain stores like Wal-Mart, but I don't always think much about promoting the local merchants, even though those are the ones I try to patronize most of the time.
