Helium is less than two weeks away from its biggest event of the year – the 2008 Philly's Phunniest Person Contest. With almost 150 contestants battling for the $1,000 grand prize and the title of Philly's Phunniest Person, this year's two-week competition is bound to be the biggest and most exciting yet.
And do you know what the best part is? YOU can help! That's right, during the preliminary round, the audience will be the determining factor in deciding which contestants will advance to the next round.
But wait - it gets better. When making a reservation to attend a show, simply mention this blog and receive 2-for-1 admission to ANY of the TEN shows during the preliminary round. With 10-15 contestants on every show, each night will be vastly different. This offer is valid for all ten shows, if you choose to be that adventurous.
The competition is not only a great way to check out the diversity of the up-and-coming Philly comedy scene, but also a great way for you to catch some comedians before they advance to bigger and better career opportunities. (You never know - after all, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Mitch Hedberg and Louis CK were all comedy competition winners, just to name a few).
This year's competition will be hosted by the 2007 winner, Steve Gerben. Since winning the contest, Steve has performed at the Borgata in Atlantic City with MADtv's Frank Caliendo, made it to the finals in the Purina Pet Comedy Challenge in St. Louis and was invited to perform in a Just For Laughs showcase in North Carolina.
Local celebrity judges from television and radio as well as industry representatives from Comedy Central, HBO & CBS will judge the semi-finals and finals. The winner will be determined on the 8pm show on Saturday, August 16, and the 10:30 show that evening will be a showcase featuring the top six finalists.
