Living in a sister suburb, next door to the city of brotherly love is a source of pride for me. I love my neighborhood and I adore the city of Philadelphia.
I have noticed that if I visit chat rooms and mention that I live in the Philadelphia region, people often exclaim, “You live in Filthadelphia?!
(I'd like to know what your reponse to that insult might be. I usually just keep my mouth shut)
I would guess that many of these people have never visited Philly, but they are under the impression that it is a scary, dirty place. People that have visited Philadelphia know that there is quite a bit of culture and beauty to be found amongst some problem areas. All major cities have areas that could use a makeover.
I believe that a simple way to preserve our city is to start by keeping it clean. I would like to urge Philadelphians and those from the surrounding area to be more responsible about disposing of trash and recycling--let’s not give people an excuse to insult our beloved, fair city. After all, the Declaration of Independence was signed in our city and Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag here.

Trash Cans and Anti-Philadelphia Potty Mouths
Right on with this post! First, I hate the anti-Philadelphia rhetoric...and a lot of times, the comment will come from a resident from a place with serious issues of it's own to deal with (dissing Philadelphia shouldn't even be on the radar!).
Back to trash: that is definitiely a pet peeve. For example, there is a suburban street that I walk on that has municipal sponsored trash cans. The first problem is that the minicipality doesn't empty them often enough. The second problem is that often, mysterious bags of garbage of unknown origins get dumped next to the trash cans. The third problem? When the cans are empty and you see trash thrown no more than five stupid feet from the can!
It really should be no big deal to try to keep the area in which you live clean. But there are a lot of careless folks out there....Let's hope the City of Philadelphia and all the visitors expected for July 4th, and Live 8 preceding it, will be proactive and responsible when it comes to the trash.....don't just throw it - stow it!
Thank you for your post!!!
