Visit Philebrity's first "Philadelphia Internet History Week"

Philebrity put together a great set of posts last week documenting Philadelphia's history on the Web. As Alex Hillman notes, this has only scratched the surface, but it's a terrific effort.

Thanks to Philebrity for adding Philly Future to the mix. There are lots and lots of people to thank for keeping Philly Future up and going, and as I mention there, I hope it continues to be of service to the community.

Hundreds of teens in Philly are breaking the cycle - we need two minutes of your time!

Did you know:

-That Philadelphia's public high school drop out rate is 50%?
-That obesity is an epidemic in teenagers?
-That hundreds of teens are working to win these fights and succeed in life, right here in Philly, by training to run a marathon?

A local non-profit youth program called Students Run Philly Style is currently in the running to win a huge award through the annual American Express Members Project contest (www.membersproject.com), and we need help pulling together some more local support.

Students Run is a mentoring program that takes students from neighborhoods all over the city and prepares them to complete the Philadelphia Marathon. It's not a traditional athletics program -- the kids who participate don't think of themselves as athletes before they begin, and they come from neighborhoods where violence is a problem and access to healthy food is really limited.

Students Run is currently #47 out of 1190 projects located throughout the world, so we actually have a shot at moving on to the next round. Click here to learn more and watch a video about Students Run:

Fundraiser for Conshohocken Fire Victims

Most Philly folk remember hearing or seeing the news a couple weeks ago, when there was an eight-alarm fire in Conshohocken that destroyed 180 apartments.

Well, for those who'd like to help while enjoying good beer and good company, A Rubber Door gives the 411 on an upcoming fundraiser for victims of the fire. It's happening at Guppy's Good Times on Saturday, September 6, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Want to Watch Barack Obama Accept the Nomination from Independence Mall?

Apparently Denver isn't the only place people will be gathering outdoors to watch Barack Obama's historic acceptance speech. From the Obama campaign website:

In Philadelphia, Independence Mall will be the site of a free public Watch Party. There will be a huge 20’ x 30’ screen on the Mall carrying a live feed from the Democratic National Convention. The Watch Party starts at 8pm and will end at the conclusion of Senator Obama’s historic acceptance speech.

Two Philly Area Men Detained in China

Local blogger Brian Conley, of Alive in Baghdad was one of two people arrested while reportedly trying to tape protestors in China yesterday. The story first hit my radar yesterday afternoon via a post on Twitter. Details were sketchy, but today's Inquirer has a few more details:

Brian Conley, 28, of West Philadelphia, and Jeffrey Rae, 28, of Wayne, Delaware County, went to China hoping to videotape protests staged by Students for a Free Tibet, according to Conley's wife, Eowyn A. Rieke. (See Conley's video blog at Alive in Baghdad.)

"We knew that the Chinese government is extremely repressive and that they might respond to any effort to get the word out about Tibet strongly," said Rieke, who is a doctor. She is 31 weeks pregnant with what will be her first child. "So I have been stressed and worried, but overall, in the context of things, what he is experiencing is pretty minor compared to what many people have at the hands of the Chinese government ...
