A man attempted to rob me, my two neighbors, and my friend while we were sitting in the living room last night at 8. this dude stabbed my buddy in the face! he told us to stay still and give him our money and that he had a 'piece' with his finger sticking in his shirt pointed at us. i figured he at least had a knife, which he did. i immediately stood up took the one step forward between where i was sitting on the couch to where he was standing in the doorway, told him everything would be okay and that it would be over in a minute, that i had money and i was going to give it to him. he must have been high or thought i was tricking him. counting out bills trying to hand them to him, the guy wasn't looking at me or the money, which freaked me out. the situation had to end and he had to leave right then. my friend was at that point right behind me, the two girls backing off into the kitchen and calling the cops. 'get out of here' my buddy pushes past me and the dude through the door. kick and punches still in the doorway, then the knife. repeatedly stabbing at my friend's chest with a flailing left hand, once hitting the face through the cheek. the dude must have had that drug addled realization that not only did he just fail to get money, but that he just got kicked in the head and stabbed a victim repeatedly. he tears off his white collared shirt undershirt and black 'F' logo hat and leaves.
A gigantic thank you to the police first responders, which were at the house in 2 minutes. Our wonderful neighbors heard the fight outside and called the cops, and everyone was outside once the cops arrived. because we are strong together and we live together. knife wounds are vicious, but my buddy is ridiculous tough, i can never say someone is okay after a face stabbing but he's fine, you know.
I will be writing more about this in other forums. be alert, be aware. we are a community and we can communicate. Say hello to everyone you see, especially if you don't recognize them! we are all in this together and together we are each others protection.

The global campaign for the acceptance of women’s rights as human rights and ofviolence against women as a violation of their human rights, captured centre stage in the1993 Vienna Conference on Human Rights and this led to the introduction of‘mainstreaming gender’ into the international human rights system. While considerableprogress has been made on this approach and for women’s equality at the conceptuallevel, the question still remains as to how these concepts are realised practically and agreat deal of work remains to be done in surfacing the manifestations of the genderedfeatures of the violations of fundamental freedoms. This task is particularly difficult incontexts where there is an ongoing struggle, and women’s needs and rights are eithergrossly violated or marginalised in view of the struggle. Struggles that remain unresolvedor festering for too long often get exacerbated into situations of conflict which in today’scontext are invariably violent in nature and armed. Reports show that these armedconflict situations are an increasing reality in many parts of the world. The UNDepartment for Disarmament Affairs has recorded over 150 armed conflicts in thedeveloping countries since 1945. Reports show that 90 armed conflicts took place duringthe year 1989-1993 in 61 locations around the world involving 60 governments, which isabout one-third of the member states of the United Nations. These conflicts involvingmostly politically marginalised peoples, impact on women in a very special way. Thusthe Beijing Platform for Action highlights the special impact of armed conflict on womenpointing out that although all sections of society are affected…..“women and girls are
particularly affected because of their status in society and their sex”

On the weekend of October 14th and 15th, local artists in our neighborhood will open their studios up to the public for the annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tour (POST). POST is a program of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, a nonprofit dedicated to making arts careers viable. More than 230 professional visual artists will be opening their studios during this two week citywide event.
In collaboration with POST, New Kensington CDC will provide a shuttle for those needing transportation to and from each studio in the Fishtown/Kensington area. The shuttle loop begins both Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon infront of Johnny Brenda’s (Frankford and Girard), and will make its way around the neighborhood, stopping at each studio along the way. The shuttle will loop every half hour and run until 6 p.m. A $5 donation grants each rider an all-day pass.
Coral Street Arts House is taking special advantage of this event by hosting a collective exhibit of fifteen area artists. The event, called “Attraction,” will showcase local artists exhibiting, selling, and performing their work at the Arts House. Two musical guests, Christine D. Baran and the Neil Podgurski Trio, will be performing on both days. The Arts House is located at Coral & Hagert, and the festivities will take place all-day Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon until 6 p.m.
Come out and join POST and New Kensington CDC in supporting local artists!

Progressive bloggers of Philadelphia, don't get taken in. The city and state political aparatus wants your support. Of course they do. These guys are very concerned, start asking why.
As I read in this morning's paper, it appears Fumo is concerned, concerned about his job and his legacy. And his friends in city and state government share his concern. Given what he is up against it doesn't surprise me. But bloggers have a role to play to uncover the stories, to look deeper, behind what is really happening in Philadelphia politics. One of the blogger participants in the meet and greet stated "We're fighting for the same thing. Everyone has to understand that." Hold on, did I miss something? Are progressive bloggers behind Act 71 that created the slots bill, did they support the pay raise?

Who: Valeria and Pampa Cortés
Valeria and Pampa Cortés are internationally renowned dancers and choreographers. Pampa's prestigious career makes him one of the most prominent representatives of Argentine tango in the world. He is often called the Fred Astair of tango, because of his charismatic elegance on stage and his numerous choreographic works. Pampa has internationally toured with the shows Tango Revue and Forever Tango. In 1998, he founded his own tango dance and production company, Tango A Media Luz, in San Francisco but continues to seduce audiences in South and North America, Japan and Europe in various stage productions. Valeria Cortés’ dance background includes studies in ballet and training in tango and folkloric dances with various maestros in Argentina, making her debut as Pampa Cortés’ partner in Asi Se Baila el Tango in Sacramento and San Francisco and performing and choreographing. Valeria was also a model for famous Cuban-American photographer, Pete Sust, in his book Human Nature, and she is the cover girl for Argus Health Products’ skin care line.
What: Argentine Tango Exhibition – Benefit for New Orleans
Argentine tango choreographers and dancers Pampa & Valeria Cortés come to Philadelphia for the first time bringing an intimate yet powerful stage creation featuring sounds, colors and emotions from Argentina. The 45-minute program with the dancing couple and a narrator invites you on a varied musical journey through time, as well as through Argentina, from its vast pampas and colourful provinces to the sophisticated city of Buenos Aires. This “con-danced” history of tango reflects the rich soul and history of Argentina. Paying a tribute to Argentine folk creator and friend, maestro Santiago Ayala, Pampa Cortés choreographed the metamorphosis of the “gaucho” into the “compadrito”, unveiling how tango evolves from provincial folkloric roots to become the sultry dance from the port city. Pampa & Valeria, Narrator Mildred Christian, costume designer María Spingola, and some of the greatest representatives of Argentine music, packed into a soundtrack, take you from the origins of tango through its Golden Age of the 1940s to the contemporary era of Piazzolla and beyond.

Perhaps the Pabst-drinking, Kerouac-quoting, Vice-reading stereotype of Philly hipsters as grungy do-littles isn’t entirely true: When presented with the option of having more space to do all of those things, hipsters can spring into action!
Such was the case when the proposal to expand Fishtown’s Johnny Brendas - a bar as retro-hip as many of its patrons - was recently put forth at a neighborhood zoning meeting.
An unlikely standoff resulted, pitting old-school Fishtowners who protest just about anything new against arty, tightly-clothed younger folks who normally couldn’t be bothered to put up a fight.
But motivation came from somewhere, as the hipsters turned out in force to set up and put away chairs, present their arguments, and passionately stand by their belief that a bigger bar makes the area just a bit better.
It makes one wonder what could be ... what if this growing segment of Philly’s population became active in something besides preservation of its own scene? What if we found a way to make, say, road and park cleanups more ironic?
In this spirit, I am calling all people in NoLibs, Fishtown and surrounding gentrifying areas - hipsters or otherwise - to come to the Penn Treaty Park cleanup on Saturday, May 20 at 10 a.m. The Friends of the Park is a new group that could use some support in their efforts to turn this undervalued, rare waterfront green space into the prime historical attraction it deserves to be.
Be there or be … too mainstream? Three people showed up for the last cleanup, so it definitely was not mainstream.

Im upset. I am sure most people are upset.
But we are all filling the pinch when it comes to healthcare cost. Every year the cost goes up. Septa seems to have pretty good benifits. The schools catholic and public high schools need to step up. Help our kids get to school. The kids don't get it they think it is couple of days. Last strike was 40 days. My son can't afford to miss days in his Junior year of high school. I don't think colleges care if there was Septa strike. I just read my son school web site it said the children will be held accountable. No mention of alternatives. My sister will help me this week. I hope they settle this faster than 40 days. I am mad it is just a total pain in the a**. People will lose jobs and other bad stuff will happen. This is the only transit system we have no other real alternatives, not for most people. So many people work in Center City and take Septa it is the fastest way.
