Kensington Memories

One of the things that has always bummed me about the Philadelphia blogosphere has been the lack of native voices. It seems so many of the prominent bloggers are transplants, save for a small handfull. I guess it's a function of the transplants looking for some sort of grounding and roots, and the locals not having the need to do that, as they already have established communities.

The recent kerfluffle with my "honorable" Congressman Curt Weldon (what I've wrote on the subject is here) has caused me to rethink that. Based on the number of times I found "my representative/congressman" and "Curt Weldon" in various blog searches, I've found a goodly number of Delcobloggers, and a number of those I would have considered Philly bloggers actually live in the 610, and not the 215, such as geekymom, billmon and attytood.

If you happen to be a Delco blogger, stop by my place and say hi or chime in with your URL below.

On another note, my wife, a Kensington girl by birth (save the tooth jokes, she has all of them) turned me on to Kensington Memories. Although some transplants may not hold us indigenous peoples in high regard, sites like this are touching and fun.

FREE ARTISTS' STUDIO TOURS - Philadelphia Open Studio Tours this weekend!

On the weekend of October 14th and 15th, local artists in our neighborhood will open their studios up to the public for the annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tour (POST). POST is a program of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, a nonprofit dedicated to making arts careers viable. More than 230 professional visual artists will be opening their studios during this two week citywide event.
In collaboration with POST, New Kensington CDC will provide a shuttle for those needing transportation to and from each studio in the Fishtown/Kensington area. The shuttle loop begins both Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon infront of Johnny Brenda’s (Frankford and Girard), and will make its way around the neighborhood, stopping at each studio along the way. The shuttle will loop every half hour and run until 6 p.m. A $5 donation grants each rider an all-day pass.
Coral Street Arts House is taking special advantage of this event by hosting a collective exhibit of fifteen area artists. The event, called “Attraction,” will showcase local artists exhibiting, selling, and performing their work at the Arts House. Two musical guests, Christine D. Baran and the Neil Podgurski Trio, will be performing on both days. The Arts House is located at Coral & Hagert, and the festivities will take place all-day Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon until 6 p.m.
Come out and join POST and New Kensington CDC in supporting local artists!

"Kensington's killing streets"

Philadelphia Inquirer: Kensington's killing streets:

L.B. and her husband bought their rowhouse in Kensington, near her childhood home, because they thought it would be safer than their former street in Frankford. There, they said, a man had killed a woman and ignited her and the car she was in.

"In my days there was drugs and stuff, too, but if you owed a drug dealer money, he didn't shoot you. He just wouldn't give you drugs," L.B. said. "Now they walk in like it's nothing. It's so pointless."

Another neighbor, Jose Cruz, 42, said he and his two children - age 8 and 12 - live in virtual captivity.

"I drive the kids to school, bring them back, and they go to their rooms and watch TV," he said. "You hear knocking at the door, you don't open it. We don't go out no more."

Antiviolence rallies are commonly held in the area, L.B. said. But she's afraid to go.

"Nobody goes," she said. "I want to, but I don't want people to see me, then shoot me while I'm walking my kids to school."

Beers and Brewers of Colonial Philadelphia: Lecture at Yards

description:

Rich Wagner is lecturing on the beers and brewers of colonial Philadelphia at Yards Brewery on Saturday, January 21st: http://www.yardsbrewing.com/events/

The lecture begins at 2 PM, but you can go early for samples and a tour of the brewery, hear the lecture, and still have time to be fashionably late for the Philly Webloggers meetup at Fergies. The event is free, and it's a great opportunity to come up to Kensington, visit the fabulous Yards tasting room, and taste some beer. Directions are here: http://www.yardsbrewing.com/tours/index.htm

PS If you like the beer, you can pick up a case for less money than the distributors charge, *and* the friendly folks at Yards will mix it up any way you'd like.

Weekend Options: Yards Brewery

Becky posts a nice piece about Yards Brewery, counting herself lucky that she lives within walking distance:

One advantage of living in Fishtown is being within walking distance of Yards Brewery, located in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. Philly has only one remaining brewery in operation (a sad state of affairs), and Yards is it. But what a brewery it is. Not only is the beer good, but the employees care about their craft and their community.  See for yourself—Yards is open to the public every Saturday from noon to three. ... (read more about it at Good Grief!)

I've never been to Yards, but now it's quickly infiltrating my list of things to consider as the weekend approaches. What about you? Any plans for the weekend?
