Comic Energy presents "A Night of Fairy Tales"

When company director James Daly informed his cast that Comic Energy's latest theatrical run would be
a night of fairy tales the group was shocked. Shocked to the point as to where exactly Daly was coming
from.

After Daly explained to his cast that this show would not be family oriented in anyway, the young, rebellious
group took a sigh of relief.

So if a fairy tale show has nothing to do about family, then what is this show? And what is the morale of the
story?

"This show is about the fairy tales, but we take the ideas and we rewrite to appease an adult crowd", says Daly.

Taking a look at the sketch list that is nicely prepared on a Cosi napkin Daly actually showed me what he calls
his secret list. A list that included Cinderella, Snow White, Mary Had A Little Lamb, and the Three Little Pigs.

"There are only two pigs, because they ate the third one", said Daly. He wouldn't reveal to me who the two pigs were
but he did give me a sneak preview on Humpty Dumpty. His parody on Humpty Dumpty pertains to the rapper in the early 90's
from Digital Underground named "Shock G" who has an alter ego named "Humpty Hump".

The cast for this Comic Energy show is a familiar one. In addition to Daly you have the very talented Mike Ford, Danielle Jackson
who plays an array of characters, James Reagan, and CE favorite Frank Fral.

Coming fresh off of a weekend of shows a couple weeks back the troupe looks to keep a very promising eigth season going with a little imagination. And speaking of fairy tales you can't go wrong.

The National @ The Fillmore at the TLA

The National are well on their way to mainstream rock star status.

Back in June, the Brooklyn based indie rockers played to a small crowd of 300 at Johnny Brenda’s, a small bar venue in Philly. Monday night they packed the house at the 1,000 person capacity Fillmore at the TLA in Philly. The show kicked off the US leg of a new world tour that runs through the end of the year.

They opened up the set with the slow build up of Start a War. By the end of the song, everyone in the band was ripping on something furiously including singer Matt Berninger who was bashing a cymbal on the drum kit with his back to the crowd. It took Berninger a few songs to warm up to the crowd. He was suffering from a nagging cough that had him cringing away from the mic between songs.

The National @ the Fillmore at the TLA

But even if Berninger was in a Robitussin haze, it didn’t draw down his energy during songs. He jumped around in fits, eyes closed, squeezing out every lyric with his entire body. The crowd ate it up and cheered him on throughout their set of the band’s songs from their latest album, Boxer, and some from their previous, mostly Alligator. The band sounded great, anchored firmly by the understated but driving drumming of Bryan Devendorf.

The sight to be seen though was Padma Newsome, who is touring with the band on violin and keyboards. He looks a little bit like Gary Oldman playing the role of crazed indie rocker. Every time Newsome picked up the violin he played it as if he was just dosed with a large amount of amphetamines. I found myself staring at him for fear that I would miss seeing him spontaneously combust.

Check out some tracks by The National, and the rest of their tour schedule over at 52 Shows.

The show will feature the troupe’s ever popular ‘frat’ series that debuted in September 2004 to a sold out crowd in South Philadelphia. Not only will Comic Energy performed “A Night To Remember” (a 5-sketch piece that stretches throughout the performance) the troupe will also feature brand new sketch material written by veteran sketch comedy writers James Daly and Walter Threadgill.

The troupe is also excited about a pilot recently shot and currently in the post-production room. It is Comic Energy’s target and main objective to represent Philly and the comedic attitude that the city has been buzzing for the last few years.

In order to inject new energy into the project the comedy troupe from South Philadelphia brought in new blood.

“We have made some additions to the cast over the summer that have not only given us the flexibility to accomplish new challenges they have added an entirely new dimension”, says director James Daly.

God Bless JJ !!

It takes a lot of heart for a man from Ohio now making Philly home to pull off something like this. The SOUTH STREET GREEN FESTIVAL was one of the best events that I attended in this city. Its a shame that it wasn't on a sunny day, but the people that attended and help host brighten up the event. It was a wonderful event that I wish more could have attended, but there is always next year. It was hosted by URBAN GREEN PARTNERSHIP ,a organization formed right off of South Street to help promote better recycling policies in our city. They create, communicate, and support the information and tools residents will need to save money and their planet.
Many sponsors promoted sustainable alternatives to better living for the people that attend this event. From growning your own clothes to heating your home with corn, the event touched every avenue when it comes to costless , energy saving living. Some officals did attend the event like Mr. Nutter, Mr. Siadel and Mr Morrice Sampson who was the head of the Philly recycling dept, now a chairman of RECYCLE NOW! The Green Party candidates also showed interest in the event and showed their support.
The music was wonderful and performed to some of the best tunes and some old school music. Even the hip hop acts that were on the Whole Foods roof were great. There was music for all diffent types of crowds that attended. The children had a ball in the kids area with clowns , face painting and a magician. JJ Biel Goebel covered all basis with this festival and make sure that everyone was happy . The overall theme of the festival is to show that there are people that really care about the environment and its issues. Plus to educate and spread this knowledge to your homes and neighborhoods. The volunteers that made this happen also should be congratulated ,especially Mr. Erik Everts , the wiz that connected all this together. Without him ,some wouldn't be possible.

We need more festivals like this or just events to show our city how much love we really have for Philadelphia . Just to take care of our environment and to pass this mentality to our children so they can continue with the legacy. There's a lot of people that care about this city , but don't know where to go or who to talk to about environmental issues. Well UGP has made their presence known that they are here for us and to show us how to live eco friendly in a city that only recycles 6%.

Comic Energy Does America

description:

Comic Energy presents “Patriotic Comedy”

Comic Energy Sketch Comedy Troupe, based in South Philadelphia will perform “Comic Energy Does America”, June 29th thru July 2nd at the Shubin Theatre.

The show will take a look at the history of America with Comic Energy’s take on some of the more important events during the birth of America, the transformation of America and some highlights through history that Comic Energy tabs as noteworthy.

A typical ingredient at any Comic Energy show would be the most unexpected ending to many of their sketches, as C.E. goes where you wouldn’t expect them to go. This has paralleled them to the likeness of comedy giant “Second City” of Chicago.

The troupe is lead by James Daly a veteran performer and former Phillies Dancing Usher and features an array of local and talented performers, whose eyes are clearly on one goal
putting Philly on television.

Comic Energy has started filming their pilot episode for a television distributor based in Florida and they exhibit a confidence that this show not only can work but will work.

This show will feature a different look at Benjamin Franklin’s discovery of electricity, the Declaration of Independence, the Boston Tea Party, and much, much more.

“Our show starts with pre-America and exhibits in the very beginning what we believe fueled our nation’s forefathers to standup against the British and start this great nation”, says Daly.

Producing a comedy show about America can be a touchy a subject to hit, but Comic Energy does it light-heartily and makes you laugh at the same time.

The story starts with the Boston Tea Party and takes us into the future of America where our president in 2020 is…well Comic Energy won’t reveal it just yet, but from the way I asked James Daly it would seem to be out in left field.

“Comic Energy Does America” runs June 29th through July 2nd at the Shubin Theatre (407 Bainbridge Street). For tickets and show information call 215-514-7508, or visit Comic Energy online at www.comicenergy.com.
