Great Expectations: District 4 Agenda Meeting I

great expectations district 4 forumApproximately 50 people gathered for Monday night's Great Expectations District 4 agenda forum at the North Light Community Center (175 Green Ln) in hilly and narrow-streeted Manayunk/Roxborough. I sat down at a table with 5 locals, most who had been to a previous Great Expectations meeting. Barbara was especially pleased she attended the citizezns convention in December and was looking forward to seeing how the Nutter administration does over the next year in regards to the agenda laid out by the citizens through this project. The ongoing basketball games next door in the other gym kept a steady beat throughout the night for the group to work by. The fluorescent lights kept things difficult for me to take photos. We were told that 4th District Councilman Curtis Jones Jr., 40 days into office, would be attending and hopefully At-Large Councilwoman Bondell Reynolds Brown would make it too.

5th Annual Roxborough Car Show

roxborough car show by albert yee
In between all the campaign work I was involved with in the past couple of months, I made it out [albeit for work] to Roxborough for their 5th Annual Ridge Runner Car Show. Out by Gorgas Park were well over 150 automobiles. Most of them were classics from the 1950s, but there were even some Model A Fords from the late 20s and early 30s and a handful of newer tuned up cars all the way from Maryland. A row of motorcycles and a trike added to the variety of vehicles there.

Follow this link for a flickr gallery of 80 shots I took while at the car show.

Coffee Culture Catching on in Roxborough

Coffee Culture Catching on in Roxborough

Coffee addicts are a rare breed among fiends. Instead of moving on to harder substances our habit tends to become snobbier and more pretentious. In the beginning instant coffee is perfectly acceptable, but before long we find ourselves asking the waitress at the diner how fresh the pot on the burner is and buying stylish bags of whole bean French roast rather than the efficient red cans of Folgers that were once a staple of our shopping lists.
While it seems as though every corner in center city Philadelphia offers to cure the urgent need for venti-caramel-macchiatos and doppio-skinny-mochachinos, until recently Roxborough has been left in need of places to score a quick and easy coffee fix.
